Kibera began as settlement for Nubian soldiers returning from military service with the King’s African rifles. These soldiers were then allocated plots of land in exchange for their efforts in the war. However, most people in Kibera slums live in extreme poverty, earning less than $ 1.00 a day. In fact, public health problems in Kibera slums rose so rapidly that as early as 1948 there were calls to relocate people. Despite this, the city continued to grow from 6,000 in 1965 to 62,000 in 1980, 248,360 in 1992 and 500,000 in 1998.

Today Kibera covers 256 hectares.
